Ava DuVernay, Academy Award nominee, is writing and directing a new show for us that’s set to drop next year on Netflix called Central Park Five. The new show will be about the true story of five Black and Hispanic teenage boys from Harlem – Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise – who were falsely accused of raping a white female jogger, Trisha Meili in 1989. After the five were already sent to jail, Matias Reyes, the real rapist, came forward in 2002 and confessed to single-handedly raping the woman, which led to the release of the falsely accused men. The entire series, which will last about four to five episodes, will cover the timespan of the initial questioning in 1989, Donald Trump’s paper add calling for their execution, all the way up to their 2014 settlement. Thus far the casting is everything that we expected it to be with Michael K. Williams playing Bobby McCray, John Leguizamo playing Raymond Santana Sr., and Vera Farmiga playing the lead prosecutor on the case. The small amount of actors listed right now are amazing at their craft, so we know that Ava will not disappoint as the rest of the roles are waiting to be filled. We can’t wait for the premiere in 2019!
