R&B On The Rise: Daniel Ceasar, H.E.R. & Ella Mai

Daniel Caesar, H.E.R., and Ella Mai are a few new faces that are heating up the current R&B game today and if you haven’t had the chance to hear any of their music yet, quite frankly… you’re sleep! Here’s some info on the artists if you’re genuinely in the dark about who they are.

Daniel Caesar

Daniel Caesar, born Ashton Simmonds, grew up in Oshawa, Canada, but left home to move to Toronto where he would pursue his music career. While working on music, without the support of his parents who wanted him to only focus on school, Caesar was homeless for a while in Toronto, forcing him to stay with friends some nights and on the streets others, and even taking up a side job as a dishwasher. All of L’s that Caesar took, however, didn’t stop him from independently dropping two EP’s, Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim’s Paradise (2015), that gained him a huge fanbase. As a result of all the support he’s gained from fans for his first two projects, Caesar already had a ton of followers anticipating his debut album which he dropped in 2017, Freudian. If this rags to riches story still doesn’t ring any bells as to who he is, then you may have heard a few people blast one of the most popular songs off of the Freudian album called “Best Part” featuring H.E.R.

19-year-old Gabriella Wilson, also known as H.E.R., is from Vallejo, California. While she was making music under RCA Records, Wilson generated a lot of buzz on social media for a few weeks, but there was a catch: she was keeping her identity under wraps. Wilson’s desire to stay away from the 24-hour surveillance antics that comes with fame and social media nowadays was the driving force behind her decision to hide her identity from the world. However, thanks to all the private detectives we have on the internet, and the cover she did of Drake’s “Jungle” on her EP, H.E.R., Vol. 1, the mystery around her identity was cracked, and Wilson, then, finally confirmed her identity. H.E.R. dropped a new EP recently titled, I Used to Know Her: The Prelude.

Ella Mai

Last, but not least, Ella Mai, born in London, United Kingdom, who started off making covers to different songs on her Instagram. She covered songs by artists like Fetty Wap, Chris Brown, Tupac, J. Cole, Michael Jackson, and many more on her page, and even started receiving requests. Mai was doing this for months until DJ Mustard slid in her DM’s, asking if she was yet signed to anyone. At the time, Mai wasn’t signed to anyone, so Mustard flew her out to New York, they made some magic in the studio, and now she’s signed to his 10 Summers imprint. She’s best known for her song “Boo’d Up,” off of her latest EP Ready but has many more songs worth listening to under her belt thus far.
