Melii is making a unique name for herself in this male-dominated rap game. She writes her own songs, spits in both Spanish and English and still manages to show off her vocal talent… talk about perfect #RBOTF material. In her viral cover of Bodak Yellow, she perfectly showcases her double-threat singing and rapping talent. The 20-year-old Dominican From Harlem signed to Interscope records late last year.
If you haven’t taken a listen to her yet, I suggest getting started with “No Simple Chick” and “BK Woe” in which she is able to self-reflect while also creating compelling rhymes. In “Sh*t Talk,” she addresses the haters with an aggressive flow and a beat that would get anyone charged up and let’s not forget about “La Envidia Mata“, a true club banger done almost completely in Spanish!
In an interview with Billboard, she talks about her Harlem hometown, how it has influenced her music and her early beginnings as a songwriter. Before Interscope, she had a few run-ins with some sketchy managers, so she decided to get started by putting out her music on her own via Instagram. Rihanna even caught wind of her and used her song “Icey” in a post.
If her fire singles are any indication of her upcoming projects, I am beyond excited! Her first full album, ‘Phases’, is set to drop any day now. Until then, we’ll be vibing to her “Icey” music video. Check it out below!
